For some weird reason, the term "OC" is a big pet peeve for me. I just use the word "character". I don't know why. Perhaps I have just seen it in bad places?

I mean, both terms work perfectly, only difference being that "oc" is commonly more associated with characters that aren't very well known made by small artists.
I personally prefer the term "Splankonkees" ( ´◡‿ゝ◡`)
I think I kinda understand where you are coming from,
personally for me, I'm fine with the term "OC", but however, it doesn't feel exactly right to call fan-characters "OC" (since "OC" is basically original character), like wouldn't that be "FC"?
what really matter is to people understand what you mean
